A Lecture on Climate Change by Mexico Ambassador to in IPB
Mexico Ambassador to Indonesia, HEAmb.Melba Pria gave a general lecture on "Mexico’s Actions against Climate Change’, Thursday (8/3) at the Darmaga Campus of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB). This lecture was attended by the students of Meteorology and Geophysics Department, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of IPB.
"The major exports of Mexico are agricultural commodities and oil. However, it is estimated that in 2050, Mexico can lose more than 4 percent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) due to climate change," said Melba. Every year there is damage to nature due to the river erosion worth up to 270 million USD. As an effort to prevent further damage, Melba said that in 2007 President Calderon launched the National Strategy of Climate Change (NNCC). This national strategy contains action programs involving clean transportation, biodiversity protection, and greening action.
Since 2006, the people of Mexico have voluntarily calculated and reported greenhouse gas emissions through 110 public activities. The last report indicates that Mexico has a total emission of as much as 150 million tons. "We are committed to reduce emissions by 13 percent. With the support from the Green Fund of World Bank and the financial aid from Norwegia, we can accelerate the action in the reduction of greenhouse gas emission," said Melba. This activity was opened the Vice Rector of IPB for Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Dr. Ir. Yonny Koesmaryono.
The visit of this Mexican Ambassador to IPB is also in the framework of cooperation in the fields of research, student exchanges, faculty exchanges, and the possibility of the southern triangle cooperation (Indonesia, Japan, and Mexico). (Mtd)
