IPB University’s Innovation Real-Thematic Work Lecture Students Provide Solutions to Crystal Guava Pests and Diseases
The agricultural sector is a source of increasing economic potential in Tlogorejo Village, one of which is crystal guava plantation. The plantation has high economic value and provides many direct benefits, especially for the people of Putatgede Hamlet.
Crystal guava yields are influenced by the condition of the crystal guava plantation. A good and suitable crystal guava tree will produce guava fruit with good quality. Unfortunately, this quality still needs special attention to the alleviation of pests. Pests that commonly plague crystal guava plantations include mealybugs, whitefly and fruit flies.
For this reason, students of IPB University's Innovation Real-Thematic Work Lecture (KKN-T) held counseling and demonstrations on controlling mealybugs, whitefly and fruit flies on crystal guava plants. The activity was supported by Agustin Isnaini Mujahidah and Ali Suhety from the Bonorowo Sub-district Agricultural Extension Center (BPP) who were present and conveyed information about good and correct cultivation of crystal guava plants.
In addition, a student of the Department of Plant Protection, Faculty of Agriculture, IPB University, Nurbaiti Santika Prima on the occasion also explained the types of pests and how to alleviate them.
"The tools and materials needed in eradicating crystal guava pests are quite easy to obtain. Fruit fly pests that can interfere with the productivity of crystal guava plants can be prevented by making traps from jars containing cotton that has been given 0.25 ml of petrogenol. After that, soapy water is poured on the surface of the jar to kill fruit flies," said Santika in her presentation.
Rahmat as the Head of Putatgede Hamlet also fully supported the work program of crystal guava pest alleviation counseling initiated by Innovation Real-Thematic Work Lecture IPB University students. In fact, he invited his house as the location of the activity. Rahmat and other crystal guava farmers were also enthusiastic to receive information about crystal guava cultivation and pest alleviation.
"Counseling and demonstrations carried out by IPB University Innovation Real-Thematic Work Lecture students are not only limited to providing information, we also distribute attractants as practical materials for farmers that can be used to eradicate fruit fly pests," said Santika.
