Prevented the Diabetes in Cats, Professor of IPB Created the Feed from Mahogany Beans
Obesity in animal was very high buildup of fat in the body, thus causing the body weight was beyond the ideal limit. Obesity could lead to the diabetes disease.
Prof. Tutik Wresdiyati, the researcher of the Department of Anatomy, Physiology, and Pharmacology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH), Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), said that Diabetes Mellitus (DM) was a disorder of carbohydrate metabolism characterized by the hyperglycemia (relatively high blood sugar). The diseases of DM could lead to the complications of several diseases such as the heart disease, the kidney failure, the retinopathy, and others. The complication was due to high free radicals in the DM patient’s body. The animal became weak and could cause death.
Prof. Tutik together with Dr. Adi Winarto (Department of Anatomy, Physiology, and Pharmacology of FKH of IPB); Prof. Deni Noviana (Department of Clinic, Reproduction, and Pathology, FKH of IPB); and Prof. Dewi Apri Astuti (Department of Science of Nutrition and Feed Technology, Faculty of Animal Husbandry of IPB) conducted the research about this.
Prof. Tutik said recently the cases of the disease of DM in dogs and cats were increasing. The increased of the disease of DM that attacked cats and dogs was one of them caused by the unbalanced feed nutrition and tended to contain the excessive carbohydrates. Therefore, it was required a good feed content in order to prevent the increase of the disease of DM.
“One of the ingredients that can be used to prevent the disease of DM in this cat is mahogany beans, so it is conducted this research with the aim of formulating the mahogany seed extract (Swietenia mahagoni) to become the cat feed preventing the obesity and the diabetes, through the palatability testing, and the clinical trial in cats,” she said.
Prof. Tutik explained that the result of the research showed that the feed formula based on the best mahogany seed extract with the highest palatability. The clinical trial of the best cat fodder showed that the content of mahogany seed extract on the feed could control the body weight, control the body mass index (BMI) or indicator of the relative fat content in the body, control the blood glucose and antioxidant levels, and control the cholesterol profile in the blood. The result of the research could be concluded that this best feed formula was one product that could be used as the prevention of the obesity and the diabetes in cats.(AT)
