Message from IPB’s rector for IPB alumni to Win in Disruption Era
About 900 students of Communication Program, Vocational School, IPB held a Public Lecture and Open Fasting with the rector on Sunday (20/5) at IPB Baranangsiang Campus. They are all using the field suit of IPB Communication Program, filling the room with enthusiasm to meet and gain knowledge from the rector, Dr. Arif Satria.
Rector of IPB invites the student who participates in the event to think simply of the science of communication, starting from the basic understanding of its application in the professional world. He explains some pillars of communication which are credibility that is built on trust, useful skills, and caring.
“the most important thing that all successful people have in common is honesty,” He said.
Besides explaining the character that all successful people have in the professional world, he also explains the disruption phenomenon which is faced by the millennium generation. A condition where 90 percent of the young generation is no longer gaining news from the newspaper, but from electronic media.
He provides an example of disruption era faced by Nokia versus Smartphone a couple years ago. Nokia, he said, is an example of a company that failed to respond the changes.
“Failure may happen because of our inability to read the changes. Rival of IPB is no longer local universities because they experience the same condition with us. Our future rival is Go-University built by Gojek. IPB faces unexpected competitors, only people who are able to read the changes who will survive,” he explained. Furthermore, he summarized the 4C which can be used by IPB alumni to win the fight in this era, there are Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, and Critical thinking. The ability to speak, to start the conversation, and to build collaboration is the most important thing in the professional world.
“in the future, IPB Vocational School will be more prestigious and attracted many students. The government encourages the development of Vocational Schools because it is considered capable of responding the changes quickly. For example, when the demand for cafe and coffee is increasing, school on the management of coffee can be opened so that graduates can be a barista,” he added.
Coordinator of Communication Program of the IPB’s Vocational School, Dr. Wahyu Budi Priatna on his opening speech says, “today is a happy day for all of us because we can meet the rector of IPB who will give us motivation. I hope all student can listen, understand, and implement it well. Hopefully, it will motivate us to be a successful person.”
