Students of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) to commemorate the Earth Day has organized the Earth Day Celebration. The theme of celebration was "Go Green and Save The Earth". The goal was to campaign or remind students of IPB on the importance of keeping and conserving the earth. Both of biophysical and other derived forms of the smallest scope it is the campus environment of IPB.

The Earth Day celebration was the result of the collaborative works between the Local Committe (LC) of Student Activity Unit of Indonesia Green Action Forum (IGAF) of IPB, Rimbawan Pecinta Alam (Rimpala Foresters who Love Nature), Student Executive Board (BEM) of the Faculty of Forestry, Dewan Perwakilan Mahasiswa (DPM Council of Student Representatives) of the Faculty Forestry, Forum Management Student's Club (FMSC), the Association of Students of Forest Resources Conservation and Ecotourism (Himakova), and the Association of Students of Forest Products (Himasiltan). The celebrations was carried out at the Landscape Arboretum, of Teaching Laboratory of the General Competence Education Program (PPKU), and the Hall of Faculty of Forestry of IPB, on 22 April 2018.

Chairman of the Department of Social, Environment and Forestry of BEM of the Faculty of Forestry of IPB,  Anggit Cahyo Nusantoro, said that the items of the present celebration program were, as follows: 1).  Tree care; 2). Removing  nails from tree; and 3). Making biopori.

The first item of the present program was the maintenance and mowing between trees for growing good trees successfully. The maintenance and mowing between trees were carried out in three ways: weeding, digging a circle around tree, and fertilizing. Weeding is to free from weeds or troublesome plants for the nursery trees.  Digging a circle around tree is a very practical reasons to remove weeds from around the trunk, grass competes with trees for water and resources and gives nothing back.  Mulch is a much better option and can protect the tree from disease, drought, harsh climates and even the stray lawnmower blade. By digging out a circle and filling it with mulch, you not only give your landscaping an aesthetic boost, but you also give your tree a health boost. Fertilization is done to add nutrients in the soil, to encourage maximum growth rate of trees.

The second item of the program was to remove nails on trees around campus. The pulling nails on the tree was very supportive for the care of trees to keep their optimal growth. Removing  nails from tree was deemed necessary as nails that have been attached to the tree can damage the stem cells.  As we should not attach objects to trees with nails, screws or anything that penetrates the outer bark. It can damage the cambium, the area just beneath the bark where cells rapidly divide and increase tree girth. It also can wound the phloem, the cells that carry nutrients from the canopy to the roots; and the xylem, the cells that transport water and nutrients to the canopy. When stem cells are damaged, the tree can’t grow optimally. Puncture wounds offer easy access to insects and diseases.

The third activity is the making of biopore holes. One of the appropriate technologies and environmentally good to absorb rain water into the ground is Biopore Absorption Holes (BAH). The project aims to reduce flood/inundation potential, increase groundwater quantity, and accelerate soil infiltration capacity, by implementing an artificial groundwater recharge method in the form of biopore infiltration holes.

Celebration with such program is very important to encourage us remain concerned about the general approach of placing environmental concerns in a human rights context and about addressing them in fora that do not have the necessary expertise. It matters because Earth is the only home that humans have, and it provides air, food, and other needs.

"We are working to reduce the risks of environmental damage, improve the environmental structure so that the earth will remain intact. If we’re interested in lessening your environmental impact and trying to live more sustainably, knowing where to begin can feel overwhelming. We must complement and support each other because a healthy and safe environment will provide a decent human life. Humans must still go green and save the earth, happy Earth Day, "he said. (Wied)
