Biologist of IPB: Lecturer Should be Creative in the Development of Basic Research

Division of Plant Physiology and Genetics, Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), Dr. Ence Darmo Jaya Supena, became the keynote speaker in “Seminar Nasional Biologi dan Pendidikan Biologi / National Seminar on Biology and Biology Education” in Salatiga, Central Java, recently. The event organized by the cooperation of the Faculty of Biology of Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana (UKSW) with Indonesian Biology Association (PBI) was carrying the theme of "Penelitian, Penerapan dan Pembelajaran Biologi dalam Menghadapi Tantangan Abad 21 / Research, Application and Learning of Biology in Facing the 21st Century Challenge".

On this occasion, Dr. Ence said, that the basic research should continue to be done with the direction of reaching the opportunities for the development and application of science and other biological technologies. “Although currently the basic research priorities are inferior to the applied research, but the lecturers and the researchers must be more creative in developing the basic research,” he said.

The event which was participated by dozens of students, lecturers, teachers, and observers of education in Indonesia lasted for one day, with two main activity agenda namely the seminar and the parallel presentation session. 

Furthermore, Dr. Ence who was also the Chairman of PBI was the resource person of the seminar with Indra Charismadji, an Education Practitioner in the 21st Century. At the seminar, Indra Charismadji explained about the national education system in Indonesia, the curriculum development, and the technology literacy direction for the students to face the global competition.

After the seminar, the activities were continued with the parallel sessions, where the participants made the presentation divided into five groups. Each participant presented the title of the presentation with a variety of titles related to the field of educational biology, zoology, microbiology, physiology, botany, and various other biological related fields.

The Chairman of the seminar committee, Dr. Elizabeth Betty Elok Kristiani, said, the purpose of this activity was to facilitate the exchange of the scientific information in the field of biology and biology education in order to face the challenges in the 21st century era.***
