The new students of the National Selection of Admission to State University (SNMPTN) to Bogor Agricultural University attended the study direction at IPB’s General Competition Education Program (PPKU), after the registration at Grha Widya Wisuda (GWW), Dramaga Campus of IPB, Bogor. This activity at PPKU is held on May 16-18 at the Common Class Room Building (CCR).

IPB requires new students to stay in the dormitory, considering that IPB students come from different cultural, religious, social and economic backgrounds. "This is intended to lead them to able to respect each other's diversity, in line with the five pillars of the educational concept, namely professionalism, social sensitivity, environmental concern, entrepreneurial spirit and moral-ethics," said Director of PPKU-IPB, Dr. Bonny P.W Soekarno.

Dr. Bonny explained, the main task of PPKU-IPB is to insure quality control at the level of general competency program of education (PPKU). This is an integrated multi-cultural based program, which is realized in the form of mandatory stay in the dormitory of PPKU-IPB. In IPB, new students are required to stay in the dorm for one year. This is also intended to prevent new students from a possible imbalance during the adaptation to the new environment.

In the first year, all IPB students will study at the same place called Common Class Rooms (CCR). CCR is easy to access because it is close to the dormitory. The lecture room at CCR is very comfortable; air-conditioned, clean and equipped with Wi-Fi facilities. There are also other lecture rooms in Teaching Lab (TL) in front of CCR, equipped with basic science laboratories for chemistry, biology, and physics.

The student dormitory is not just a place to live, but more importantly it is a facility for academic and multicultural coaching programs. This program is intended to facilitate students to adapt to the campus life, the student world and improve the soft skills, such as in communicating, organizing, and understanding plurality. For that purpose, the first-year in the Student Dormitory is supported by academic and multi-cultural coaching activities. In the dormitory, they are accompanied by a Senior Resident. She or he is an older fellow student who stays in the dorm to help new students with academic and non-academic problems.

Apart from facilitating new students through the program and activities in the dorm of PPKU IPB, IPB also provides a Counseling and Guidance Team, which consists of senior lecturers of IPB. The students can express all matters with this team.

The sense of togetherness built in the 1st year in the dormitory turns out to be an emotion to which is hard to find the equivalent. Mutual help in joy and sorrow is indirectly very helpful in facilitating their studies. Generally, the emotion of helping each other continues after leaving the PPKU-IPB Dormitory. The students form or join a regional student organization (Omda). The books that are no longer needed are then given to their younger fellow students of the same origin who are still studying in PPKU IPB. Some Omdas are also actively promoting to the schools where they come from. This is also a place of friendship with the school of their origin. (Mtd)
