Nothing is impossible in the development of biological science. So said a biologist of Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB), Prof. Antonius Suwanto in the Discussion of Biological System organized by Directorate of Research and Innovation in Darmaga Campus of IPB, Thursday (14/11). Take the example of the latest development of biology the innovation of cloth made from spider web invented by the Japanese company named Spiber of Tsuruoka. "Maybe a few years ago, it was impossible, but not for now," said Prof. Antonius

Prof. Antonius further said, all scientific disciplines are related to one another, so the development of biological science should be supported by other sciences. With the availability of the new finding in biology, it is necessary to have an innovation ecosystem, a good economic climate, government policy and markets. "How is it implemented from research to the market," he said.

Biology does not only contain a collection of facts. Many biological phenomena can only be explained by researchers with strong backgrounds of chemistry, physics or mathematics. Biological education should be able to engage students in actively, creatively, effectively and fun.

Prof. Antonius hopes that to develop the biological sciences, higher education must provide adequate infrastructure and facilities so that students can be creative with the micro objects they see themselves. They do not have to memorize because of a lack of facilities. In addition, in their development, various disciplines should mutually supportive to create common ideals and purposes. This discussion was attended by IPB researchers and those from Biological Research Center of Indonesia. (Mtd)
