IPB University, through its School of Coffee, is once again hosting a thematic learning series titled “Coffee as a Driver of Change and Hope.” At the first session held on Monday (7/6), participants were invited to understand the strategic role of coffee, not only as a flagship commodity but also as a driver of the economy, innovation, and community empowerment.

Dr Ahmad Junaedi, the guest speaker, explained that coffee is one of Indonesia’s key commodities, making a significant economic contribution. In addition to being a source of revenue for the state, coffee also serves as a livelihood for farmers, a space for innovation among creators, a business opportunity for entrepreneurs, and a platform for the younger generation to pursue their passions through entrepreneurship.

“Arabica and Robusta have been the two main varieties in the history of coffee development in Indonesia since the 16th century. Currently, approximately 95 percent of the national coffee cultivation area and production are managed by smallholder farms, so the development of the coffee sector plays a crucial role in improving community welfare,” said Dr Ahmad Junaedi.

Not only that, but participants also gained insights into trends in the national coffee industry ranging from the growth of coffee shops in Indonesia and various coffee based product innovations to the challenges facing the coffee sector, such as climate change affecting crop productivity. In addition, participants were introduced to proper coffee harvesting techniques, including full harvest, semi selective harvest, and selective harvest methods to maintain the quality of the crop.

The session concluded with an interactive discussion on the various challenges and opportunities for the development of the coffee industry. One key point emphasized was the importance of strengthening downstream processing and building strong partnerships with farmers to ensure market access and increase the value added of Indonesian coffee products.

Through the Coffee School, IPB University hopes that participants will not only understand the aspects of coffee cultivation but also be able to view coffee as a strategic commodity that can drive innovation, community empowerment, and sustainable economic development. (*/Rz) (IAAS/LAN)
