IPB University’s LPA2I and PKGA Discuss Indicators for Implementing Gender Mainstreaming from a GEDSI Perspective
The Institute for Agromaritime Development and Innopreneurship Acceleration (LPA2I) at IPB University, in collaboration with the Center for Gender and Children’s Studies (PKGA) at IPB University, organized a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on indicators for implementing gender mainstreaming from the perspective of Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI).
This event served as a forum to discuss and align indicators for the implementation of gender mainstreaming with the GEDSI perspective within IPB University. The FGD was also part of an effort to synchronize the existing gender mainstreaming roadmap with the studies and programs developed by PKGA, so that its implementation can proceed in a more focused, integrated, and measurable manner.
Vice Chair of LPA2I for Innovation, Technology Transfer, and Sociopreneurship, Prof Tri Prartono, emphasized in his opening remarks the importance of collaboration and coordination among units in establishing a framework for gender mainstreaming and GEDSI at IPB University.
“Through this collaboration, it is hoped that various programs, both those already implemented and those to be implemented, will support one another and be effectively applied within the IPB University community,” he said during the event, which took place at the Swiss-Belhotel Bogor recently.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the International Research Institute for Social, Economic, and Regional Development, Prof Arya Hadi Dharmawan, highlighted the importance of the institution’s response to the diversity of the campus community. This year’s intake of new students at IPB University, totaling approximately 10.000 students, with about 60 percent of them being women, underscores the need to provide campus facilities and an environment that are increasingly responsive to the GEDSI perspective.
“The GEDSI concept at IPB must be built on the principles of equality, diversity, inclusivity, and respect for the rights of every individual,” he explained. These principles of equality must then be translated into a vision, implementation indicators, and concrete actions on campus.
Strengthening Data, Accessibility, and an Inclusive Campus
The Chairperson of PKGA, Dr Yulina Eva Riany, stated that the implementation of gender mainstreaming is guided by a number of strategic programs, with the Science Techno Park (STP) serving as one of the pilot sites for a GEDSI friendly area, in terms of structure, facilities and infrastructure, as well as resources.
She also highlighted the strengthening of data systems, facility mapping, and campus development as crucial components of GEDSI implementation to measure representation, access, participation, and the achievements of various groups within the IPB community.
Fostering a Responsive Academic Environment
The discussion also involved several units at IPB University to explore the conditions and needs for GEDSI implementation across various aspects. From an academic perspective, Prof Anna Fatchiya, Vice Dean of FISEMA for Resources, Collaboration, and Development, emphasized the importance of increasing GEDSI sensitivity among faculty and educational staff.
“GEDSI principles can also be integrated into the learning process, research, and community service in accordance with the characteristics of each field,” she said.
A similar point was made by Prof Efi Yuliati Yovi from the IPB University Graduate School. She emphasized the importance of more flexible learning policies for students with specific circumstances, including students with disabilities, pregnant students, and students who already have children.
Through the collaboration between LPA2I and PKGA, the results of this FGD are expected to serve as input for refining the implementation of the GEDSI-based gender mainstreaming roadmap at IPB University. (*/Rz) (IAAS/WSG)
