The IPB University Patriot Expedition Team in Sijunjung Regency kicked off a series of activities with a meeting with the Sijunjung Regency Government on (8/3). The meeting, which took place at the Sijunjung Regent’s Office, served as the first step toward aligning perspectives and strengthening synergy in driving economic transformation in the Kamang Baru transmigration area.

The meeting was attended by Sijunjung Regency Regional Secretary. (Sekda) Sijunjung Jaheri, Chief of the Manpower and Transmigration Office (Disnakertrans) David Rinaldo, Chief  of the Transmigration Division Mashuri; representatives from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the Sijunjung Police Department, a number of relevant regional government agencies (OPDs), as well as the IPB Patriot Expedition team, led by Dr Veralianta Br Sebayang, and its members.

Focus on Downstream Processing and Industrialization
Dr Veralianta explained that the 2026 Patriot Expedition has a different focus. While previous years emphasized mapping potential, this year the team is focusing on the downstream processing and industrialization of palm oil commodities through strengthening cooperative institutions, enhancing human resource capacity, and fostering multi stakeholder collaboration. 

“This step is intended to ensure that palm oil does not remain merely a raw material, but is processed into various economically valuable products that can increase farmers’ income and open up new business opportunities,” she said.

In addition, the team also identified potential uses for palm oil waste and other commodities, such as kepok bananas at the Padang Tarok Transmigration Site, which could be processed into flour as a raw material for the food industry. This development is supported by exploratory partnership discussions with offtakers, ensuring that communities are not only supported in terms of production but also have guaranteed market access.

“Our hope is that this entire series of studies will result in a comprehensive feasibility study to serve as the basis for policy making and the implementation of downstream processing programs in the transmigration area next year. That way, the recommendations we’ve compiled won’t remain merely academic documents, but can truly be realized as programs that have a tangible impact on the community,” she concluded.

Representatives of the Sijunjung Regency Government welcomed the team’s visit and expressed their support for the IPB Patriot Expedition. Secretary Jaheri noted that the findings of the study would serve as strategic input for the local government in formulating development policies.

“The presence of the Patriot Expedition team this year has been very helpful to us. The resulting recommendations will serve as the basis for formulating regional policies, especially since Sijunjung Regency is part of the Sawahlunto-Sijunjung-Dharmasraya (SSD) region, which is a priority for downstream development under the National Strategic Project,” Jaheri explained.

David Rinaldo, Chief of the Department of Manpower and Transmigration, added, “We fully support this initiative. We hope that the findings of the Patriot Expedition team will serve as both a scientific foundation and actionable recommendations to drive economic transformation in the transmigration areas of Sijunjung Regency.” 

Closing the meeting, the Sijunjung Regency Government expressed its hope that the entire series of IPB’s Patriot Expedition activities would proceed smoothly. “Best of luck to the Patriot Expedition team.
