IPB University is hosting the 2026 South-South Ocean Accounting Exchange, which is being held at the IPB International Convention Center in Bogor (3/30–31).

The Rector of IPB University, Dr Alim Setiawan Slamet, stated that this forum is of great significance for the institution in strengthening its commitment to sustainable ocean management. According to him, the primary investment for the future of the oceans lies in human resource development.

“IPB University has been entrusted to host the South-South Ocean Accounting Exchange 2026 and is facilitating five master’s students and five doctoral students through the GOAP Fellowship scholarship program. These ten scholarship recipients are dedicating their research to addressing future challenges in ocean governance,” he said during a press conference (3/30).

He added that IPB University is also preparing a special scholarship scheme for the best students from Global South countries. This program is designed to deepen expertise in the fields of maritime governance and marine accounting.

The rector hopes that this initiative will strengthen collaboration among countries in the Global South and foster a new generation of leaders in the field of sustainable ocean governance.

On that occasion, he emphasized the importance of ocean accounting as a strategic tool. This concept is seen not merely as a means of presenting statistical data, but as a framework that links the condition of marine ecosystems with economic activities.

“Through ocean accounting, data can be transformed into measurable policies, ensuring that the use of marine resources remains in harmony with the environment’s carrying capacity,” he explained.

IPB University also expressed appreciation for its collaboration with the Global Ocean Accounts Partnership in organizing the forum. This collaboration is considered vital as a platform for Global South nations to share experiences and strengthen their capacity in marine accounting.

The forum highlighted the challenges faced by many developing countries, particularly coastal and island nations, in balancing economic development with the protection of marine ecosystems.

As a country with vast marine resources, sustainable management of marine resources requires a comprehensive understanding of the interconnections between ecosystems, economic activities, and coastal communities.

IPB University reaffirms its commitment to continuing to promote the advancement of science, innovation, and policy in support of sustainable development, particularly in the agricultural, marine, and environmental sectors.

Through its vision of an inclusive and sustainable Agromaritime approach, IPB University believes that the future of food security, climate stability, and economic prosperity hinges on efforts to preserve the sustainability of the oceans. (dh) (IAAS/FHD)
