Traveling with Children? Important Advice from a Child Education Expert at IPB University
Traveling home for the holidays is an annual tradition eagerly awaited by many families, especially during Eid. However, long-distance travel often presents its own challenges, especially when traveling with children.
Dr Yulina Eva Riany, a child education expert from IPB University, emphasizes that thorough preparation is essential to ensure the journey is safe, comfortable, and enjoyable for all family members. She shares several important tips for parents planning to travel with children.
“First, ensure the child is in good health and fit. If necessary, parents can consult with a healthcare professional about their child’s health condition before traveling,” said the lecturer from the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences at IPB University.
She also reminded parents to prepare essential items for the journey, such as healthy snacks, milk, spare clothing, medications, and other necessities. “Don’t forget to bring important documents, such as identification cards and the child’s health card,” she added.
For families using private vehicles, the vehicle’s condition must be ensured to be in optimal condition. Dr Eva emphasized the importance of using a car seat appropriate for the child’s age to enhance safety during the journey.
Meanwhile, if opting for public transportation, she suggested booking tickets well in advance so parents can choose a more comfortable schedule for the child.
“For air travel, it is best to choose flight times that do not interfere with your child’s sleep schedule and to prepare toys or snacks to distract them,” she advised.
As for train travel, Dr Eva recommends choosing seats that are more spacious and close to the toilet. This position will make it easier for parents when their children need to use the toilet or have their diapers changed. She also reminded parents to avoid vehicles that are too crowded and lack child friendly facilities.
Dr Eva also emphasized several important things during the trip. Parents, she said, are advised to bring comfortable clothes that are suitable for the weather at their destination. The availability of drinking water and healthy snacks is also important to prevent dehydration.
“Prepare basic medicines such as fever reducers, telon oil, bandages, and wet wipes,” she added.
To prevent boredom, parents can bring their children’s favorite toys or books. If the child still wears diapers, make sure to bring enough supplies and a changing mat.
Dr Eva also reminded parents to recognize signs of fatigue in children, such as fussiness, lethargy, frequent yawning, or lack of enthusiasm for play. “Parents need to anticipate this by providing sufficient rest time, whether through sleep or simply sitting and relaxing,” she explained.
In addition, signs of dehydration such as dry mouth, infrequent urination, sunken eyes, and pale skin should also be watched out for.
To keep children calm during the trip, parents need to ensure that they get enough sleep before departure. Playing with their favorite toys, reading storybooks, or playing children’s songs and educational videos can help keep their mood positive.
“If possible, take a short break to walk around and breathe in some fresh air, especially during road trips,” concluded the Chairperson of the Center for Gender and Children Studies (PKGA) at IPB University.
With thorough preparation and full attention from parents, traveling with children can be a safe, comfortable experience that leaves beautiful memories for the family. (Lp) (IAAS/KQA)
