Obstetric emergencies in pregnant women remain a health issue that can threaten the safety of both mother and fetus. These conditions may arise suddenly, such as bleeding, seizures, hypertension, and severe infections. Therefore, the public needs to understand the warning signs of pregnancy complications in order to seek medical assistance promptly.

This was conveyed by a lecturer from the Faculty of Medicine and Nutrition at IPB University, dr Ganot Sumulyo, SpOG. According to him, obstetric emergencies are acute conditions that can become fatal if not handled immediately.

“Obstetric emergencies are sudden conditions that threaten the lives of both mother and baby, such as bleeding, seizures, high blood pressure during pregnancy, severe infections, and obstructed labor,” he stated in a program on the IPB Podcast on YouTube IPB TV.

Based on data from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Health, most emergency cases are actually preventable. However, dr Ganot noted that delays in bringing pregnant women to health facilities remain one of the main causes of high maternal mortality rates.

Danger Signs in Pregnancy
dr Ganot emphasized that pregnant women must recognize warning signs that require immediate attention. One of the most critical signs is bleeding during pregnancy.

“The most important danger sign that must not be ignored is bleeding. At any stage of pregnancy, if bleeding occurs, the patient must go to the hospital immediately,” he stressed.

Other symptoms that should be closely monitored include severe headaches accompanied by blurred vision, intense abdominal pain, high fever, and severe shortness of breath. These conditions may indicate serious complications such as preeclampsia or infection.

He added that fetal movement can also serve as an indicator of the baby’s condition in the womb. “If there is no movement felt for several hours, the pregnant woman should seek medical examination immediately,” he added.

The Importance of Routine Antenatal Care
To prevent emergencies, dr Ganot emphasized the importance of routine pregnancy check ups or antenatal care (ANC). The Ministry of Health recommends at least six examinations throughout pregnancy.

He also reminded that the risk of complications does not always end after childbirth. The postpartum period up to 42 days after delivery still requires monitoring, as complications may still occur.

“Recognize the danger signs early and do not delay seeking medical assistance. Family support is also crucial to ensure that pregnant women can go through pregnancy safely,” he concluded. (Fj) (IAAS/KAL)
