IPB University, through the Institute for Agromaritime Development and Innopreneurship Acceleration (LP2AI), is reopening its startup business incubation program through Promoting Research and Innovation through Modern and Efficient Science and Technology Parks (PRIME STeP) in 2026.

Entering its fourth year of implementation, this program not only focuses on funding but also on building a collaborative ecosystem so that startups can grow independently and sustainably.

The Chairman of LP2AI IPB University, Dr Handian Purwawangsa, emphasized that successful incubation requires more than just classroom training; it must be realized through the synergy of resources between startups, campuses, and industry partners.

“Startups have the ability and enthusiasm, IPB has the network and facilities, and partners also have their own resources. If all of these are collaborated into a complete ecosystem, the business will, God willing, be bigger and more sustainable,” he said.

He noted that in its fourth year, LP2AI has begun to place significant emphasis on connecting tenants with the existing business ecosystem at IPB University, including production facilities, faculty innovations, and industry networks. This approach is expected to accelerate the commercialization of campus research outcomes.

Dr Handian also emphasized the importance of a dialogical approach in the tenant selection and mentoring process. Reviewers not only evaluate proposals, but also engage in discussions to help startups find business development strategies.

“We want to have discussions together, not just make corrections. Experience shows that when young entrepreneurs are given room to grow, the results are much better,” he said.

In addition to promoting the profitability of startups, LP2AI also hopes that tenants can contribute to the sustainability of the IPB University Science Techno Park (STP) ecosystem and have an economic impact on the community.

Target of 100 Startups
Meanwhile, Vice Chaie of Business Incubation and Industry Collaboration LP2AI, Prof. Rokhani Hasbullah, said that the PRIME STeP program for the 2023–2027 period targets the incubation of 100 startups.

In 2023, 14 tenants received funding of Rp200 million per startup, resulting in an increase in employment from 488 to 616 people, or a 26 percent increase. Tenant revenue also increased significantly from Rp303 billion to Rp574 billion, or a jump of 89 percent during the incubation period.

“By 2026, we aim to incubate 40 startups, comprising 28 incubation tenants, eight pre-acceleration tenants, and four acceleration tenants, with funding of up to Rp550 million per startup,” he explained.

Looking ahead, he emphasized that LP2AI will continue to strengthen collaboration between startups and faculty inventors so that campus innovations can develop into impactful businesses, create job opportunities, and support regional economic growth. (AS) (IAAS/DON)
