There are many health tips circulating on the internet that claim baking soda is beneficial for treating acid reflux and boosting immunity. But are these claims true?

dr Widya Khairunnisa, MSc, a lecturer in Biomedical Pharmacology at the IPB University Faculty of Medicine, responds to these claims.

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is widely known as a leavening agent for cake batter.

“In the medical field, sodium bicarbonate is also used as the main ingredient in antacid medications that neutralize acid, thereby alleviating acid reflux symptoms,” explains dr. Widya.

However, dr. Widya continued, consuming baking soda directly in powder form without rules and in large quantities should be avoided.

“Baking soda contains high levels of salt, so it has the potential to trigger electrolyte imbalances, increased blood pressure, and even heart problems if consumed in excess,” she explained.

Not only that, she explained that baking soda can react with stomach acid and produce carbon dioxide gas. This can increase pressure in the stomach. “Consuming large amounts can cause bloating, diarrhea, nausea, and other digestive disorders,” she said.

If consumed daily, there may be some unwanted responses from the body, such as pH and electrolyte imbalances. “Baking soda is alkaline, so if there is an excessive amount in the body, the acid-base balance can be disrupted.”

Furthermore, dr. Widya highlighted the risk of increased blood pressure due to the sodium content in baking soda. “If consumed daily, sodium in the blood can increase, which can worsen hypertension,” she added.

“There is no strong scientific evidence that baking soda can boost the immune system or make the body healthier. Claims like this are more popular on the internet, but are not supported by strong research,” she explained.

Additionally, daily consumption of baking soda actually increases health risks, so it should be avoided. If it is needed to address issues like acid reflux, she recommends consulting a doctor to prevent unwanted side effects.

“The public should prioritize a healthy lifestyle as a proven and safe way to boost immunity, such as a balanced diet, adequate sleep, regular exercise, avoiding excessive stress, and proper hydration. If treatment for acid reflux is needed, it should be discussed with a doctor,” dr Widya advised. (dh) (IAAS/EPK)
