A team of lecturers from the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) at IPB University visited the Abeking & Rasmussen shipyard in Germany to observe the construction process of the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Support Ship (BHO) KRI Canopus-936 belonging to the Indonesian Navy.

The IPB University delegation, consisting of Dr Syamsul B Agus, Dr Adriani, and Dr Steven Solikin, was received directly by the BHO Ship Task Force Commander, Colonel (P) Anom Puji Hascaryo, and the Commander of KRI Canopus-936, Colonel (P) Indragiri Yani Wardhono.

The BHO KRI Canopus-936 ship is one of the Indonesian Navy’s strategic assets that is being built to support hydrographic surveys, bathymetric mapping, oceanographic measurements, and marine research operations in various Indonesian waters.

With state-of-the-art technology on board—ranging from multibeam echosounders and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to modern oceanographic equipment—the ship is expected to improve the quality of national marine data.

Dr Syamsul B Agus expressed his appreciation to the Indonesian Navy for opening up opportunities for collaboration with the academic world. “We hope that KRI Canopus-936 can become a joint research platform that strengthens Indonesia’s marine research capabilities.”

He said, “This collaboration will encourage the use of more accurate marine data and enrich scientific studies in various fields of oceanography and hydrography.”

The existence of this ship, he continued, will open up great opportunities for improving the quality of education and research, especially in seabed mapping, oceanographic dynamics, maritime survey technology, and the development of a sustainable blue economy.

“This visit reinforces IPB University’s commitment to supporting Indonesia’s vision as a global maritime axis, through strengthening marine research and strategic cooperation with various national and international partners,” he concluded. (*/dh)(IAAS/RWA)
