The BacteriaXHunter team, consisting of students from the Chemistry Analysis Study Program at IPB University Vocational School, carried out a community service activity at SMP Negeri 5 Bogor City. The activity successfully involved 103 eighth-grade students, focusing on education about microbes and the importance of maintaining personal hygiene.

This program is a form of implementing student learning in the classroom as well as a manifestation of the implementation of the three pillars of higher education. Through an educational and interactive approach, the basic concepts of microbiology were conveyed contextually and closely related to the students’ daily lives.

The activity was described as an engaging introduction to microbiology by Muhammad Arif Mulya, SPi, MSi, a lecturer in the course “Methods of Analysis in Microbiology.”

The topics covered included an introduction to microorganisms, their presence in the environment and daily snacks, and their connection to human health. In addition to the presentation of materials, the activity also included interactive discussions, educational quizzes, and a science show that involved the students’ direct participation.

“We also included games to increase students’ enthusiasm and understanding of the importance of being careful in choosing snacks and the habit of washing hands as a disease prevention measure,” said Cateleya Zalfa Putri Yudarinta, one of the team members.

The activity was carried out with great enthusiasm from the students. The communicative and participatory delivery method was considered effective in helping students understand the material presented.

“Through this community service activity, students at SMPN 5 Kota Bogor are expected to be more careful in choosing and buying snacks and to get into the habit of always washing their hands before and after activities,” she explained.

With an understanding of microbes, students are expected to be able to apply clean and healthy living behaviors in their daily lives, both at school and at home. (*/Rz) (IAAS/NRA)
