The Center for Coastal and Marine Resources Studies (PKSPL) at IPB University has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting sustainable coastal development through its involvement in the Nature-based Solutions for Advancing Coastal Resilience (Nusacore) program.

Under the mandate of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), PKSPL IPB University, together with the Rekam Nusantara Foundation, will assist 12 coastal districts in Central Java in implementing this program.

The Nusacore program aims to strengthen coastal areas’ resilience to the impacts of climate change, improve the welfare of coastal communities, and ensure inclusive and science-based management of marine resources through nature-based solutions (NbS).

The program kick-off, held at the Patra Semarang Hotel Convention in Central Java (10 30), marks the beginning of collaboration between KKP, the Rekam Nusantara Foundation, and PKSPL IPB University, with support from the UK government’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

“PKSPL’s involvement in the Nusacore program is part of IPB University’s tangible contribution in providing applied science that directly benefits the community,” said the Chairman of PKSPL IPB University, Prof Yonvitner.

He added, “Through Nusacore, we want to ensure that science, policy, and society are in harmony.”

“Nature-based approaches are not merely conservation concepts, but climate adaptation strategies that prioritize social justice and ecosystem sustainability,” said Prof Yonvitner, who is also a professor at the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences at IPB University.

In line with this, Dr Akhmad Solihin, Deputy of the Socio-Economic and Institutional Program at PKSPL IPB University and lecturer in Marine Law and Policy, emphasized the importance of establishing equitable local governance.

“Sustainable coastal areas cannot be viewed solely from an ecological perspective. Community welfare must be a key part of the solution. Through multi-stakeholder collaboration in Nusacore, we are working to strengthen regional capacity so that they are able to manage resources independently and sustainably,” he said.

Representatives from the British Embassy in Jakarta, the Chair of the Rekam Nusantara Foundation, and the Director of Ecosystem Conservation at the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries also emphasized cross-sector collaboration as key to promoting effective conservation and climate adaptation, especially in the coastal areas of Central Java, which are highly vulnerable to hydrometeorological disasters.

The series of events also included a session on the dissemination of national marine conservation policies, interactive discussions with the Central Java Provincial Marine and Fisheries Service, and a technical presentation on the implementation of the Climate and Ocean Adaptation and Sustainable Transition Facility (COAST) program, which is the umbrella for Nusacore’s work.

Through a scientific and collaborative approach, PKSPL IPB University is committed to continuing as a strategic partner in strengthening the resilience of Indonesia’s coastal regions toward a resilient, fair, and sustainable future. (IAAS/KQA)
