IPB University Strengthens Climate Change Research Collaboration at MAIRS-FE Meeting at Peking University
IPB University participated in the “Meeting of Scientific Steering Committee for Monsoon Asia Integrated Research for Sustainability-Future Earth (MAIRS-FE)” organized by MAIRS-FE together with Future Earth Global Secretariat Hub (China) some time ago.
IPB University was represented by Dr Perdinan, MNatResEcon, lecturer at the Department of Geophysics and Meteorology, and Rizki Abdul Basit, a student of the Computer Science Graduate Program. The event took place at the College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Peking University (CESE PKU), China.
“We proposed a framework for climate change adaptation that can be implemented across sectors, as well as the importance of strengthening monitoring and evaluation in the operationalization of Indonesia’s Climate Change Action Plan,” explained Dr Perdinan.
Through this forum, the IPB University delegation encouraged the strengthening of research collaboration in the Asian region through the Asian Research Collaboration Hub initiative with three main focuses. First, Climatic Dataset (From Observation to Projection). This includes the provision of historical climate reanalysis data, land and sea climate projection datasets, and extreme climate analysis for terrestrial and oceanic regions.
Second, Information System (From Data to Decision Support). This focus, said Dr Perdinan, includes inventorying the impacts and adaptation actions of climate change, assessing impacts on land, coast, and sea, and developing climate learning and literacy platforms.
Third, Climate Action (From Knowledge to Implementation), which includes pilot projects on urban and ecosystem-based adaptation, cross-sectoral programs (climate, health, livelihoods), as well as forums and fellowships on science and policy in the ASEAN region.
“IPB University’s participation in this activity is a strategic step in strengthening international research networks, evidence-based scientific development, and making a real contribution to accelerating climate change adaptation actions at the national and regional levels,” said Dr Perdinan.
At this forum, the IPB University delegation also described the conditions and challenges of climate change in the ASEAN region, particularly Indonesia. They also explained how the intensity of extreme climate events has impacted the food, water, health, energy, ecosystem, and disaster sectors.
The opening session was attended by Prof Tong Zhu (College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Peking University) and Prof Jiaguo Qi (Department of Geography, Environment, and Spatial Sciences, Michigan State University). In his remarks, Prof Jiaguo Qi emphasized the importance of strengthening bridges for research collaboration between countries in Asia, especially in facing the increasingly complex challenges of climate change.
The meeting also featured presentations on research developments from leading scientists, including Prof Yong Liu, Prof Yang Ou, and Prof Yue Qin (CESE PKU), Prof Tong Jiang and Prof Lili Lei (Nanjing University), Prof Charlie Navanugraha (Nakhon Phanom University, Thailand), and Prof Balt Suvdantsetseg (Mongolian Academy of Sciences).
