IPB University Lecturers Introduce Mangrove Crab Integration-Mangrove Restoration Approach in Muara Gembong
Lecturers in Aquatic Resource Management, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science (FPIK) IPB University, Prof Sulistiono and Dudi Muhammad Wildan, SP, MSi introduced a mangrove restoration approach through a mangrove crab integration program.
“Mangrove planting can be combined with crab stocking. Based on research, the presence of crabs can fertilize mangrove growth,” said Dudi during a socialization event for residents of Mekar Village, Muara Gembong (15/11).
In addition, he continued, crab release means that the community does not just wait for the mangroves to grow, but also gains economic benefits when the crabs can be harvested.
“Through community empowerment, this activity encourages active participation by residents in restoring the mangrove ecosystem while creating new economic opportunities for coastal communities,” said Prof Sulistiono.
This program is part of the I-CAN Synergy on Multidisciplinary Collaborative Study (I-CAN Sync) grant, thanks to the collaboration between IPB University and the University of Waterloo, Canada.
According to Prof Sulistiono, the integration of mangrove planting with mangrove crab seed distribution not only supports ecosystem restoration. The program also provides economic benefits through the potential for crab harvests in the future.
“The men will focus on planting mangroves and spreading seeds and raising mangrove crabs. Meanwhile, the women will participate in a women’s empowerment program through training in processing crabs into marketable products such as crab floss, crab meatballs, and crab crackers,” he explained.
This socialization also served as a forum for discussion on the appropriate locations for mangrove rehabilitation. The local neighborhood association recommended areas affected by abrasion as priority locations.
“To support the implementation of the program, we will also collaborate with experts who will provide comprehensive training ranging from preparation techniques, processing, packaging, to product marketing strategies,” he concluded. (*/Rz) (IAAS/LAN)
