As the Secretariat of the PEMSEA Network Learning Centre (PNLC), the Center for Coastal and Marine Resources Studies (PKSPL) at IPB University, together with the PEMSEA Network Local Government (PNLG), organized the “2024 PNLG-PNLC Joint Workshop on Sustainable Coastal Development”.

This activity is in line with the agenda of the International Symposium on Education in Marine Affairs in Xiamen, China, in early November, which is also part of the World Ocean Week (WoW) series. Featuring 32 sub-events in all areas of Xiamen City, the event was opened by the Ministry of Natural Resources of the People’s Republic of China together with the Mayor of Xiamen City.

Chairman of PKSPL IPB University and President of PNLC, Prof Yonvitner, said that the collaboration between PNLG and PNLC is an effective form of networking in integrating coastal development.

“We are committed to strengthening science for integrated and sustainable coastal development within the framework of achieving the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). With strong partnerships and integrative science, we hope that sustainable development can continue to be guided in development programs,” he said.

On this occasion, Prof Yonvitner also held a meeting with PNLG Secretariat Coordinator Prof Fang Qinhua. During this meeting, various collaborations and future cooperation were agreed upon to guide science-based policy and development in East Asia.

Five local government representatives were present, namely DKI Jakarta, Sukabumi Regency, Selangor Malaysia, Cavite Province Philippines, and the Ministry of Natural Resources, China. The learning centers were represented by PKSPL IPB University, Coastal and Ocean Management Institute (COMI) Xiamen University, Zhejiang University, and Guangdong Ocean University.

The workshop also included a field trip to Haicang District, Xiamen, to observe blue citizen practices in elementary and junior high schools. Ocean literacy is not only a thematic subject but also part of a larger mission to foster a love for the sea. (*/Rz) (IAAS/ASY)
