Behind the advancement of atmospheric science and climatology in Indonesia, Prof Daniel Murdiyarso has become an inspiring figure for many generations of young scientists. As a token of appreciation for his dedication and contributions, the Department of Geophysics and Meteorology (GFM) at IPB University held a farewell ceremony for this IPB University professor in an atmosphere filled with warmth and respect.

The Chief of the GFM Department at IPB University, Dr Ana Turyanti, expressed her pride in Prof Daniel Murdiyarso’s work, which has been a great inspiration to the academic community.

“My experience as a student learning to ‘capture’ rain, writing scientific papers, and assisting students in teaching, all of which were guided by Prof Daniel,” she said during the Farewell Lecturer event at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) recently.

She added that the success of the GFM Department in achieving excellent accreditation for its undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs was the result of the hard work of the seniors, including the significant contribution of Prof Daniel. “We will continue to strive to carry on his spirit and ask for your prayers so that we can fulfill this contribution well,” she added.

Meanwhile, the Dean of FMIPA IPB University, Dr Berry Juliandi, expressed his deep appreciation for Prof Daniel’s contribution in building a strong scientific atmosphere on campus.

“It is not easy to find lecturers like Prof Daniel. It takes decades to produce another educator with his dedication and capacity,” he said.

Dr Berry added that Prof Daniel’s mentoring of students was a long-term investment for the academic world.

“I know many of Prof Daniel’s students who are now great scientists. They all acknowledge how much influence he had in shaping the character of young Indonesian scientists,” he said.

He also noted that Prof Daniel’s exemplary character was not only evident in his scientific work and achievements, but also in his humble and consistent attitude in teaching.

“Prof Daniel doesn’t talk much, but his work speaks volumes. He is a real example of how a scientist’s reputation is built on consistency and hard work,” he said.

On this occasion, Prof Daniel Murdiyarso shared his deep impressions during his career at IPB University. He recalled his long journey in the academic world, his interactions with students, and the dynamics of research that shaped his scientific character.

“Most of my time in Indonesia was spent interacting academically on this campus. I am grateful to have been part of the process of building a generation of young scientists,” he said with emotion.

He also emphasized the importance of maintaining integrity and critical thinking in research. “Writing and scientific thinking are important, but even more important is understanding the message behind the data, for that is where the value of a scientist lies,” he said. (dr)(IAAS/FMT)
