IPB University Alumni Develop SJFeed, an Innovative Feed Boosting Cattle Weight by Up to 1,3 Kg per Day
Amid the challenges of national food security and the growing demand for animal protein, an IPB University alumnus has proven his contribution through real-world innovation. Koes Hendra, a graduate of IPB University’s Faculty of Animal Science, successfully developed SJFeed, an innovative livestock feed capable of increasing cattle weight by up to 1,3 kilograms per day.
Koes Hendra, now the Founder of SJFeed, emphasized that high-quality feed is the key to livestock productivity.
“With Super Feed concentrate, cattle weight gain can reach 1,3 kilograms per day significantly higher than when relying solely on grass,” Koes explained.
This innovation began as a small research project during his time as a student at IPB University, when he cultivated mealworms and used their by-products as feed ingredients. From that simple experiment emerged a high-protein feed formula, which later evolved into the company’s flagship product under PT Sugeng Jaya Group.
“SJFeed was born from years of research since my college days at the Faculty of Animal Science. It started from mealworm cultivation, then developing its by-product into animal feed. Today, Super Feed has become our main product with continuously growing market demand,” he added.
By 2025, SJFeed will have operated two factories in Bogor and Temanggung, with a new facility under construction in Mojokerto. The company is also expanding its distribution network through warehouses in Palembang, Banten, and Lampung, targeting a Rp12 billion revenue in 2025.
According to Koes, feed accounts for up to 80 percent of livestock operational costs. Therefore, efficiency through high-quality feed is an urgent need for farmers.
In addition to product quality, SJFeed prioritizes feed safety and compliance, holding an official Feed Registration Number (NPP) from the Ministry of Agriculture and conforming to the Indonesian National Standard (SNI).
“We are proud to be one of the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Bogor with official distribution permits. This reflects our commitment to advancing the national feed industry,” Koes stated.
Looking ahead, Koes aims for SJFeed to expand its reach to livestock centers across Indonesia. “Our dream is simple to establish feed factories in every district so that farmers can have easier access to high-quality feed,” he affirmed.
The story of Koes Hendra exemplifies the vital role of IPB University alumni as drivers of innovation in agriculture and animal husbandry. Through scientific approaches and an entrepreneurial spirit, he has shown that research-based innovation can create tangible impacts not only for the livestock sector but also for community welfare and Indonesia’s food security.
