Panic attacks can occur at any time, even when a person is resting or just waking up. This condition occurs when the body experiences a sudden wave of intense fear.

“Panic attacks are indeed frightening, but they are only temporary and can be managed with proper treatment,” explained dr Riati Sri Hartini, SpKJ, MSc, a psychiatrist and lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine, IPB University, in an episode of IPB Pedia on IPB TV’s YouTube channel.

She noted that panic attack symptoms include rapid heartbeat (palpitations), chest pain, shortness of breath, a sensation of choking, trembling, and irrational thoughts such as fear of death or losing control.

“These unrealistic fears emerge simultaneously in a sudden situation,” she added.

According to dr Riati, the exact cause of panic attacks is not yet fully understood. However, there are several factors that can trigger or worsen the condition, ranging from genetic and biological factors, such as family medical history and chemical imbalances in the brain, to environmental and psychological factors, such as stress, trauma, and substance abuse.

To overcome panic attacks, she suggests several simple techniques, such as relaxation, debriefing, meditation, yoga, and positive affirmations.

“The key is to do it regularly and continuously, so that the body does not accumulate stress, which ultimately triggers panic attacks,” she said.

However, if panic attacks occur repeatedly, two to three times a week, and interfere with productivity, he advises seeking professional help immediately.

“We need to see a professional to validate this condition, whether it is indeed a panic attack or another medical problem. If it is a panic attack, appropriate therapy will be provided so that it does not interfere with daily activities,” said dr Riati.

By recognizing the symptoms and understanding the triggers, one can develop anxiety management strategies and reduce the risk of panic attacks. “The key is to remember that a panic attack is a temporary reaction, and we have control over our bodies,” she concluded. (Fj) (IAAS/LAN)
