IPB University and Sun Yat-sen University, China, strengthened their international academic network by organizing the 5th Marine Tropical Ecology Summer Course. The event was held at the IPB campus in Bogor and the Thousand Islands as the location for fieldwork.

This program brings together students from both campuses to learn together about tropical marine ecology and small island resilience, while also building collaboration across educational levels. The summer course was attended by 20 participants, consisting of 10 students from Sun Yat-sen University, China and 10 students from IPB University, who were undergraduate (S1) and graduate (S2/S3) students.

During the inauguration ceremony, the Dean of Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science (FPIK) IPB University, Prof Fredinan Yulianda, emphasized the importance of broadening knowledge and cross-border collaboration in the development of tropical marine science.

Chairman of the Marine Science and Technology (ITK) Department, Dr  Syamsul Bahri Agus, also emphasized that this 5th summer course program is a concrete step towards strengthening the internationalization of education and opening up opportunities for student exchanges.

“IPB University welcomes the continuation of this collaboration through the 2025 winter course program at Sun Yat-sen University, China, at the end of this year,” he added.

As a result of this international collaboration, IPB University and Sun Yat-sen University have agreed on various forms of strategic collaboration, one of which is the exchange of lecturers, researchers, staff, and students in summer and winter course programs.

The implementation of this cooperation also includes joint research in the form of field surveys, atmospheric and oceanographic measurements, and marine ecological monitoring. In addition, a long-term cooperation framework is being developed for double degree programs, seminars, and collaborative research centers.

“IPB University and Yat-sen University are committed to joint scientific publications in the form of reports and proceedings, as well as the exchange of academic resources such as teaching modules and laboratory protocols,” added Dr Syamsul Bahri.

Through these activities, IPB University reaffirms its commitment as a pioneer in world-class tropical marine education and strengthens its contribution to building marine and small island ecological resilience. (*/Rz) (IAAS/NVA)
