From Students to Policymakers from Around the World Gather at IPB University to Discuss Critical Issues in Marine and Fisheries
The Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) of IPB University, through the Center for Coastal and Marine Resources Studies (EMBRIO), successfully held the 7th EMBRIO International Symposium (EIS) virtually.
This prestigious international forum brought together academics, researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and students from various countries. They shared insights and engaged in discussions on crucial issues in marine and fisheries with a focus on biodiversity, sustainability, and resilience.
Rector Prof Arif Satria stated that this symposium is not merely a space for knowledge exchange. “EIS represents IPB University’s commitment to connecting academia, government, and the international community to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” he said.
Previously, Dean of FPIK IPB University, Prof Fredinan Yulianda, emphasized that the sustainability of marine and fisheries sectors requires a multidisciplinary approach and cross-country research networks. “Through EIS, we seek to make a real contribution by facilitating the exchange of ideas and building global synergy towards healthy, resilient, and competitive oceans,” he remarked.
The symposium also featured presentations from participants from around the world. They showcased research findings and innovations in the fields of marine and fisheries sciences ranging from marine biodiversity studies, fisheries technology, coastal resource management, to innovative ideas for inclusive and sustainable ocean development.
Chair of the 7th EMBRIO International Symposium (EIS), Dr Roza Yusfiandayani, stated that this symposium serves not only as an academic platform but also as a strategic space to strengthen international networks and foster long-term research collaborations.
“Through EIS, we hope to generate new ideas that can address global challenges and offer concrete solutions for a more sustainable future for our oceans,” she said.
Speakers at the forum included Prof Rachmat Pambudy (Minister of National Development Planning) and Dr Arif Havas Oegroseno (Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs). In addition, five invited speakers from various international institutions also participated: Prof Indra Jaya from IPB University (Indonesia), Prof Fang Qinhua from Xiamen University (China), Dr Lisa Becking from Wageningen University and Research (Netherlands), Dr Muhammad Naimullah from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (Malaysia), and Pilar Velásquez Jofre from ICIAAD (Guatemala).
