Research collaboration and the use of genomics in the fields of health and food security are being strengthened through cooperation between IPB University and the Center for Biomedical and Health Genomics (BB Binomika) of the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes).

This collaboration is expected to have a tangible impact on high-quality food, healthier livestock products, and more targeted healthcare services.

This strategic collaboration was marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between IPB University through the Faculty of Medicine (FK) and the Ministry of Health at the AGI Summit 2025 event held at the Gran Melia Hotel in South Jakarta on Saturday (8/2).

Rector Prof Arif Satria explained that IPB University is committed to bridging research outcomes with community needs.

“IPB University is ready to develop a community hub that not only plays a role in research but also educates and guides the community in understanding genomics and its applications in the field of health,” he said.

Currently, Prof Arif noted, IPB University continues to expand genomics-based innovations across various sectors—from plants, animals, to humans.

“IPB University has produced various superior varieties, such as salt-tolerant rice, high-quality potatoes, and low-cholesterol sheep. These innovations stem from a genomic approach and will become even stronger with cross-sectoral support,” he explained.

He mentioned that IPB University is currently developing a biobank as a genetic conservation center and strengthening the field of bioinformatics to analyze genetic data from various species.

“We have even begun mapping human genes based on ethnicity, as genes are the key to understanding the root causes of issues and improving the overall quality of life for communities,” he said.

Dr dr Ivan Rizal Sini, GDRM, MMIS, FRANZCOG, SpOG, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at IPB University and Chair of the Indonesian Genomics Association (AGI), welcomed this collaboration. He noted that this collaboration aligns with AGI’s vision to build a national genomic ecosystem connecting academia, industry, and government.

He also emphasized that the national genomic community continues to promote the practical application of this technology within society.

“Indonesia urgently needs to improve the quality of agricultural and livestock seeds. This collaboration supports President Prabowo’s Asta Cita vision while strengthening food security and health through a genomics-based approach,” he said.

Indonesian Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin, who also attended the event, stressed the importance of cross-sectoral genetic-based research.

“Human, plant, and animal DNA share the same scientific foundation. Therefore, synergy between IPB, BB Biogen, and the Ministry of Health is crucial in developing precision medicine and a sustainable food security system,” he stated. (*/Rz)(IAAS/FMT)
