Can Stress Cause Baldness? Here’s What a Psychiatrist from IPB University Has to Say
Prolonged stress not only affects mental health, but can also trigger baldness. This phenomenon is known as alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss, leading to baldness in several areas of the head.
Psychiatrist and lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine, IPB University, dr Riati Sri Hartini, MSc, SpKj, explained that this condition occurs when stress hormones such as cortisol increase and disrupt the immune system, causing the immune system to mistakenly attack the hair follicles.
“An increase in cortisol reduces the protein in the hair follicles and prolongs their resting phase. Growth is disrupted and the hair cycle becomes abnormal. This can manifest as alopecia areata,” she said on the IPB Pedia program on the IPB TV YouTube channel.
In addition, stress can also trigger the behavior of pulling out one’s own hair, or trichotillomania. This condition is often related to underlying psychological problems, such as depression or anxiety.
However, dr Riati emphasized that not everyone who experiences stress will experience hair loss. “Stress is not the only risk factor. If other factors are not present, hair loss will not necessarily occur,” she explained.
Alopecia areata not only affects appearance, but also mental health. Many sufferers experience a decrease in self-confidence, anxiety, and even depression.
Treatment can be medical or psychological. Medically, dermatologists can prescribe corticosteroids in the form of injections, ointments, or oral medication, hair growth stimulants, immunomodulators, or JAK inhibitors to balance proteins.
From a psychological perspective, managing stress through a healthy lifestyle, relaxation, yoga, meditation, and consultation with a professional are important steps.
“Maintaining mental health is just as important as maintaining physical health. If you experience severe stress or unusual hair loss symptoms, seek professional help and consult a doctor,” advises dr Riati. (Fj) (IAAS/LAN)
