Can Cat Scratches Transmit Rabies? Doctor of IPB University Explains First Aid Measures
Who would have thought that cat scratches could potentially transmit rabies, especially if not handled properly. Therefore, it is important to know the first aid measures that should be taken if a cat scratch occurs.
According to dr Trisni Untari Dewi, a lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine (FK) at IPB University, rabies virus transmission occurs through bites, scratches, or licks on open skin (mucous membranes) by animals infected with the rabies virus.
The rabies virus enters the body through open skin or mucous membranes but cannot enter through intact skin.
In Indonesia, animals that can transmit rabies to humans include dogs, cats, and monkeys. However, the primary source of transmission is dogs. Approximately 98 percent of all rabies cases are transmitted through dog bites.
“Cat scratches rarely transmit rabies, but there is still a risk if the wound is open and comes into contact with the saliva of an infected animal,” said dr Trisni.
dr Trisnis explained that anyone scratched by a cat should immediately wash the wound with soap and clean water for at least fifteen minutes. The wound should then be cleaned with an antiseptic such as alcohol or povidone iodine. (dh) (IAAS/EXC)
