Coconut milk is now being considered as an alternative to cream in coffee. Menu items such as coconut milk coffee are now widely available at many cafes and coffee shops. However, is it safe to consume coffee mixed with coconut milk?

According to Vieta Annisa Nurhidayati, SGz, MSc, lecturer at the Food Service Management and Nutrition Study Program at IPB University’s Vocational School, the use of coconut milk in coffee is permissible as long as it is consumed in reasonable amounts.

“Coconut milk can be used as a creamer, especially for consumers who are lactose intolerant or who want to avoid animal products. It tastes savory and can even be creamier than regular creamers,” said Vieta.

She explained that coconut milk contains lauric acid, which has antimicrobial properties and can potentially boost the immune system. The type of fat in coconut milk is Medium-Chain Triglycerides (MCT), which is easier for the body to digest.

However, Vieta reminded that coconut milk has a high saturated fat content. Therefore, she does not recommend consuming it in excess.

“Although generally safe, coconut milk should be consumed in moderation to maintain health,” she explained further.

Vieta also gave a special note for people with dyslipidemia, heart disorders, or gallbladder problems to be careful when consuming coffee mixed with coconut milk.

The use of coconut milk in coffee can be an attractive option for consumers who avoid dairy products, given its characteristics that are more friendly to the digestive tract. (dh) (IAAS/LAN)
