IPB University, together with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and a number of official partners, has completed an in-depth survey, which will serve as the basis for planning a project to increase national rice production and productivity for the 2026–2032 period.

The program also involves the Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) and the Ministry of National Development Planning/National Development Planning Agency of the Republic of Indonesia (Kementerian PPN/Bappenas).

IPB University Rector Prof Arif Satria stated that the survey, which began on June 30, 2025, demonstrates the strong commitment of all parties to strengthen national food security through research, innovation, and farmer empowerment.

The survey activities include desk-based discussions, field visits to Subang, Sukabumi, and Pamijahan (Bogor), as well as dialogues with farmers, farming groups, extension workers, financial institutions, and cooperatives.

“Rice is not only a staple food but also the foundation of national food security and the livelihood of millions of people. Therefore, increasing rice productivity must be addressed strategically, including through greater integration of technology,” Prof Arif said in his remarks in Jakarta on Wednesday (7/9).

He noted that the proposed project is based on four strategic objectives: establishing a Rice Innovation Center (RICE) at IPB University, improving access to high-yielding varieties, expanding innovative agricultural technology, and developing a farmer-oriented rice value chain.

Furthermore, Prof Arif emphasized that efforts to sustainably increase rice productivity must also consider the real challenges faced on the ground. These include increasing climate variability, limited agricultural land, market inefficiencies, and the continued need for greater technology integration at the farmer level.

“We greatly appreciate KOICA’s consistent support, particularly through collaboration with IPB University. On behalf of IPB, the Ministry of Agriculture, and Bappenas, we are fully committed to realizing all project outcomes as outlined in the proposal,” he said.

Prof Arif also expressed gratitude to KOICA experts, the IPB team, and all partners for their contributions and hard work during the survey process. He hopes that the results of this in-depth survey will serve as a strong foundation for the implementation of the project in the next phase.

“Let us continue to move forward with a spirit of collaboration and long-term dedication toward the transformation of Indonesia’s agricultural sector into one that is inclusive and sustainable,” he said. (*/Rz) (IAAS/KDP)
