Inspirational Story of Ojol Driver Accepted at IPB University: “Want to be Independent, Don’t Want to Depend on Parents”
Life’s struggles and independent spirit brought Riko Jandika to the gates of higher education. This new student of IPB University in Plant Protection Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture has an inspiring story of struggle.
Before officially becoming a student, Riko had become an online motorcycle taxi (ojol) driver to make ends meet while achieving financial independence. He was accepted at IPB University through the Talent Pathway because of his achievements in Scouting.
During the three-month gap period after graduating from high school, Riko decided not to stay idle. He utilized his free time by working.
“I thought about finding a job. At first I wanted to work in a restaurant, but I was worried about the contract system and the unclear salary,” said the alumnus of SMAN 9 Bogor.
He chose to become an ojol driver because he is flexible and can adjust his time. The decision was made so that he would not depend on his parents. “I want to be independent and not be spoiled by life. I also want to help my parents,” he said.
The proceeds from working as an ojol are used to fulfill personal needs and help the family. “I buy my own needs, such as food and transportation. Sometimes I also give my parents rice, oil, or money,” he explained.
Entering college, Riko plans to reduce his activities as an ojol to focus on education. “For now, I will stop temporarily. Maybe later I will continue during the holidays or if I have free time,” he said.
He admitted that he felt prestigious about becoming an ojol at a young age. However, the experience actually shaped his mentality and independence. “At first I was reluctant, but I realized I had to be strong. I can’t continue to be spoiled,” he said.
Riko also conveyed a message to other students who are struggling. “Keep your spirits up. I am sure that friends who are in difficult conditions have a strong mentality and do not give up easily,” he said.
Riko Jandika’s story is a clear example that determination and hard work can pave the way to higher education. His struggles as an ojol driver not only shape his independence, but also form a tough character in facing the future. (Fj) (IAAS/AVM)
