This year, IPB University’s Undergraduate Program (S1) Independent Selection (SM) uses a proctoring-based supervision system with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI). There were approximately 3.600 participants taking the exam to get seats in various study programs.

According to the Director of Education Administration and New Student Admission of IPB University, Dr Utami Dyah Syafitri, IPB developed an AI proctoring-based exam supervision system for several reasons. First, as a mitigation measure against cheating. Second, IPB University tries to lead in terms of learning technology, especially in terms of AI-based supervision.

In the SM pathway this year, IPB University also developed two registration systems. First, students who are eligible for National Selection Based on Achievement (SNBP) who have not been accepted at state universities (PTN). Second, students who are eligible for National Test-Based Selection (SNBT) with the application of a minimum Computer-Based Written Test (UTBK) score to take the SM IPB online exam.

In this proctoring-based exam system, one proctor is tasked with supervising 75 participants in one group. There are a total of 57 supervisors on duty with the help of 27 technicians.

Meanwhile, Dean Apriana Ramadhan, SKom, MKom as Assistant for Digital Transformation, Institute for Information Management and Digital Transformation (LMITD) IPB University said, this AI proctoring system was used to monitor all participant activities.

“There are two cameras used. First, the front camera to capture footage of participants’ faces and the second camera from behind to record the environment around participants,” he said.

With this system, he continued, supervisors can communicate online with the participants. So, if participants experience difficulties or problems, they can be detected immediately.

“Then if there is cheating or unauthorized actions, it can be immediately detected by this system and participants will be sanctioned,” he said.

Assistant for Information and Communication Technology Infrastructure, Dr Mushthofa added, this year’s AI-based proctoring system has an advantage over the previous year, namely that all exam participants’ activities will be recorded thoroughly.

“The security system is also implemented in layers. Starting from recording activities in the form of images and sounds, the ability to proctor through the chat feature, to retrieving log data from the exam system to detect unusual (non-human) activities,” he explained.

To prepare for this system, there are two stages of pre-testing. In the first stage, participants were asked to install the application and the necessary hardware and software.

Furthermore, in the second pre-test, participants used the installation results to simulate the real exam environment.

“IPB University has conducted various trials or trial tests, both internally and externally. This simulation is carried out repeatedly to ensure good integration between the proctoring system and the exam system used,” concluded Dr Musthofa. (Lp) (IAAS/PRO)
