IPB University Plant Conservationist: Raja Ampat Blue Orchid, an Endangered Rare Gem
Raja Ampat’s natural beauty lies not only in its marine wealth, but also in the unique flora that grows on its land. One of them is the blue orchid (Dendrobium azureum Schuit), a rare and endemic species found only in Waigeo Island Nature Reserve, Raja Ampat, Southwest Papua.
IPB University Plant Conservation Expert, Dr Agus Hikmat, said that in terms of botany and conservation, the Waigeo blue orchid has a very high value. “This blue orchid is so special because it is only found on Waigeo Island, nowhere else in the world,” he said.
This species has been globally categorized as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. However, legally in Indonesia, Dendrobium azureum is not yet included in the list of protected plants based on the Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry (Permen LHK) Number P.106/MENLHK/SETJEN/KUM.1/12/
Although not yet legally protected at the national level, Dr Agus reminded that attention and protection measures from various stakeholders are needed.
“As an endemic species with endangered status, blue orchids need serious protection so that their survival is maintained,” said the lecturer at the Faculty of Forestry and Environment (Fahutan) IPB University.
Furthermore, Dr Agus also reviewed the threats to the natural habitat of blue orchids. He mentioned that deforestation and hunting for trade are the main factors that endanger the existence of this plant.
Regarding mining activities in Raja Ampat, Dr Agus said that although it does not directly damage blue orchid habitat in the short term, the impact can be felt in the long term.
“Damage that occurs on surrounding islands due to mining can threaten habitats on Waigeo Island, especially with the influence of strong ocean currents,” he explained.
Dr Agus suggested that mining activities in the Raja Ampat area be avoided to maintain the unique biodiversity in the region, both on land and sea. As an alternative, he proposed utilizing Raja Ampat’s natural resources for environmentally friendly ecotourism activities.
“The utilization of the Raja Ampat area should be directed towards environmentally friendly and sustainable tourism activities. Thus, this natural wealth can provide benefits for the welfare of the local community in the long term,” he said. (dr) (IAAS/PRO)
