Tani dan Nelayan Center (TNC) IPB University has launched the Indonesian Fishermen Friends Community. This community was formed to create a space for dialog, share knowledge and experience, and strengthen networks between fishermen and academics, central and local governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), companies/industries, and others.

Teman Nelayan Indonesia Community is an inclusive platform that brings together various important elements in the national fisheries sector. This community consists of fishermen from various regions in Indonesia, academics from various institutions, civil society organizations, private businesses in the fisheries sector, local governments, and local communities spread throughout the archipelago.

The initiator of Teman Nelayan Indonesia Community, Dr Roza Yusfiandayani, who is also the Vice Chairperson of TNC IPB University, said that the beginning of the formation of Teman Nelayan Indonesia began on January 17, 2025 in a virtual meeting of fishermen and various elements from all over the country.

At the meeting, there were representatives of fishermen from Aceh to Maluku, along with local governments, Food Security, Agriculture and Fisheries Offices. Also present were private fisheries businesses, the Indonesian Fishermen’s Association, academics, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and the Indonesian Traditional Fishermen’s Union.

“This community grows from the spirit of mutual cooperation and mutual concern. It is a forum for the voices of fishermen to connect, learn, and contribute to realizing an inclusive, resilient, and sustainable fisheries and marine sector,” she explained.

The Teman Nelayan Indonesia community was launched during the Tani and Nelayan Center (TNC) Talks 10 Webinar entitled “Fishermen’s Welfare through Appropriate Policies and Sustainable Marine Resources”, recently.

Dr Roza expressed her appreciation for the implementation of this forum that brings together fishermen and various parties from the fisheries and marine sector.

According to her, this forum is an important momentum for fishermen to connect and collaborate with various stakeholders. All this time, fishermen often receive less attention and are marginalized.

Through this forum, they can connect with academics, government (central and regional), businesses, NGOs, media, and other communities in realizing a sustainable fisheries and marine sector.

“Our mission is to create a meeting space for dialogue and voice aspirations while strengthening relationships between fishermen with academics, central and local governments, ministries, NGOs, mass media, and other communities to support the sustainability of an inclusive, resilient, and sustainable fisheries and marine sector,” concluded Dr Yoza.
