Parasitologist and lecturer at the School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (SKHB) IPB University, Dr drh Supriyono, reveals a number of interesting facts about cockroaches that are rarely known to the public.

High Radiation Resistance?

One of the unique things mentioned is the cockroach’s ability to withstand higher radiation exposure than humans and other animals.

“Cockroaches have thick skin and a unique metabolic system, so they can tolerate higher levels of radiation. However, this does not mean they are completely immune. In very high radiation, cockroaches can also die,” explained Dr Supriyono.

Adaptive Primitives

He also mentioned that cockroaches are primitive living creatures that have undergone little evolutionary change since ancient times.

“Today’s cockroaches are very similar to fossils found in the past. This shows high adaptability,” he said.

Prefer Walking to Flying

Naturally, cockroaches have two pairs of wings. The first wing is stiffer and thicker, so cockroaches prefer to walk or crawl quickly rather than fly. However, they can fly when they feel threatened.

Can’t Turn Over on Your Prone?

Responding to the myth that cockroaches can’t turn over when in the prone position, Dr Supriyono confirmed that. “Their long and slanted leg structure makes it difficult for them to turn over, especially on slippery surfaces. As a result, they can become dehydrated and die,” he explains.

Closer if threatened?

Regarding the notion that cockroaches tend to approach humans when startled, Dr Supriyono said it was a response to a threat. “They run for shelter and may inadvertently head towards humans,” he said.

To prevent the presence of cockroaches at home, he suggests maintaining cleanliness, especially in areas such as the pantry, bathroom, and trash can. “Clean up food scraps, keep food tightly closed, dispose of garbage regularly, fix leaks, and clean the trash. (IAAS/KDP)
