In commemoration of the National Anti-Violence Day, the National Commission (Komnas) Women in collaboration with the Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence (PPKS) IPB University organized a Public Campaign with the theme “End Violence Against Women, Make Campus Safe”, Tuesday (10/12) at IPB Dramaga Campus, Bogor.

“Victims of violence are actually not only women, but also men, but most victims are women. With this campaign, we hope that violence against women can be minimized,” said the Chairperson of the IPB PPKS Task Force Team and Chairperson of the Department of Communication Science and Community Development (SKPM), Faculty of Human Ecology (Fema), Dr Anna Fatchiya.

Secretary General of the National Commission on Violence Against Women, Dwi Ayu Kartikasari in her speech said that this event was part of a series of activities to commemorate 16 days of anti-women’s violence. “This activity calls for the urgency of protecting women victims of violence, fulfilling the rights of victims, and ending all forms of gender-based violence in the education environment,” Dwi said.

Furthermore, Dwi said, this campaign is also to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 5, on Gender Equality which emphasizes the importance of eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls, and empowering them in all aspects of life.

“In addition, these efforts also contribute to Goal 16, which focuses on promoting peace, justice and strong institutions, by ensuring access to justice for all and reducing violence in society,” Dwi continued.

Dwi revealed that according to the National Commission on Violence Against Women’s 2024 Annual Report, West Java has the highest number of cases of violence against women in Indonesia. There were 51.866 cases of violence in Indonesia.

This campaign presented speakers from PPKS IPB Team Member, Puji Mudiana, SP, MA and from the National Commission on Violence Against Women, Veryanto Sitohang. Pudji Mudiana conveyed the forms of sexual violence in the form of verbal, physical, non-physical, and online or through information and communication technology.

“Just a look or a glance and a mocking smile can be reported as sexual violence. The impact on victims of violence is very deep. This sexual violence should not lead to the impact of dropping out of study and career,” Puji explained. She urged us to immediately provide assistance to victims, by siding with victims.

Veryanto Sitohang said that violence against women in education, especially on campus, is quite high. “The high level of violence against women means that in the future, the PPKS Task Force’s duties are not only related to sexual violence but in general, such as bullying and intolerance.” (*/Rz) (IAAS/RUM)
