Pest Disturbance in Settlements, PTN Department of IPB University Brings Pest Control Experts in Guest Lecture
The Department of Plant Protection (PTN) of IPB University brought pest control experts to the Guest Lecture activity which is part of the Pest Warehouse and Settlement course, on Monday (11/25).
The expert in question is Radhy Alfitra SP from PT ETOS Indonusa. Radhy, his nickname, is an alumnus of the Plant Protection Department of IPB University class 44.
Starting the exposure, Radhy explained that pests in the neighbourhood is something that is considered trivial for some people, but if left alone it can disturb the residents of the house.
“Pest disturbances from insects such as cockroaches, flies, and ants can cause physical disorders in the form of bites, irritation, and hives. While non-physical disturbances can make the residents of the house and the aesthetics of the house disturbed,” he said.
He continued, cockroaches can come into the house because there is a source of feed. Cockroaches are able to eat all types of food (omnivorous) so they can eat leftovers in the kitchen, organic materials in the bathroom, and other areas.
In addition, disturbances in settlements not only come from insect groups, but also from non-insect groups such as mice, dust mites, cloth moths, centipedes, spiders, and even snakes.
“Residential pests are generally active looking for food at night or nocturnal. At night there are not many human disturbances. If there are mice that roam in the morning or during the day, then it is certain that the rat population in the field is already high or overpopulation,” he explained.
Pest control in settlements, Radhy continued, can go through five stages of the process, namely survey, identification, recommendation, treatment, and evaluation. “Identification is an important thing to do. If it is wrong in identifying pests, then the recommendations given can also be problematic,” he said.
Radhy said that the point of view used by pest control experts in neighbourhood pest control is different from the point of view of agricultural pest control.
Agricultural pests use the basic threshold of control based on the number of populations, but residential pests cannot use the same.
“Customer pest control does not want pests in their residential areas or zero pests. The control given is not only about the application of pesticides, but as much as possible using a more environmentally friendly way so that customers are not constantly exposed to synthetic chemicals,” he said.
Pest control service companies, he said, must provide excellent service in order to provide satisfaction to customers. When there is a complaint, the company can provide a 1×24 hour service to respond to it.
