The Faculty of Forestry and Environment IPB University Invites Youth to Contribute to Forest Management and Climate Crisis Mitigation

The Faculty of Forestry and Environment (Fahutan) of IPB University once again held the International Summer Course on Forestry and Environment (ForSC2024). This fifth conference event raised the theme ‘The Youth Contributions in the Forest Management for Climate Crisis Mitigation’. 

ForSC 2024 was attended by 132 participants from 27 universities from seven countries. Some of the participating universities were Kyoto University, Seoul National University, University Putra Malaysia, University of Malaysia Sabah, Tanjungpura University, and others. 

The summer course, which is routinely held every mid-year, includes various activities. Starting from lectures, study tours to Gunung Walat University Forest, Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park, and Situ Gunung. In addition, there is also an international Youth Initiative Contest (YIC) competition.

Prof Iskandar Z Sinegar, Vice Rector of IPB University for Global Connectivity, Collaboration and Alumni Relations said, “Through this activity, we hope that the younger generation will take full advantage of this opportunity. We encourage active participation in each learning session, collaboration with other participants, and openness to new experiences.” 

“We believe that the contribution of youth in forest management can play an important role in addressing the climate crisis. By harnessing their energy and innovative ideas, we can work together towards sustainable solutions for the future of our planet,” said Prof Iskandar.

Dr Naresworo Nugroho, Dean of Fahutan IPB University, said that this activity is expected to increase the role and participation of the younger generation in forest management and conservation to mitigate the climate crisis. 

“We hope that the development of youth networks at the international level can be the first step for collaboration in achieving sustainable forest and environmental management, not only in Indonesia but also throughout the world,” he said.

The IPB University lecturer also emphasized the importance of forest sustainability in facing the current climate crisis. According to him, the challenge of forestry is a global problem that requires a joint solution.

The event was supported by Tanoto Foundation, IPB University’s Directorate of International Education, IPB Fahutan Alumni Association (HA-E), Pertamina International Exploration and Production, and PT Rinjani Parahita Nusantara. Study tour in this summer course was also supported by Gunung Walat University Forest, Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park Center, and IPB Future Museum and Gallery. (MW/Rz) (IAAS/Aly)
