The Student Organization Capacity Building Program (PPK Ormawa) team from the Student Executive Board (BEM) of the Faculty of Human Ecology (Fema), IPB University, conducted an ecoprint workshop with children from Madrasah Ar-Ridwan in Sukawening Village, Dramaga, Bogor Regency, West Java.

The ecoprint workshop took place in the art and environment interaction literacy corner, one of six literacy corners established by the PPKO BEM Fema IPB University team. This activity aimed to provide the target group with insights into the art of batik, which uses natural and environmentally friendly dyes.

In addition to the ecoprint workshop, the PPKO BEM Fema IPB University team also conducted a socialization session explaining the concept of ecoprint and its techniques. The ecoprints were created using the pounding technique, applying natural materials like cassava leaves, papaya leaves, and ornamental plant leaves from the surrounding area onto canvas tote bags.

Amalia, a member of the PPKO BEM Fema IPB University team, stated, “The creation of ecoprints also aims to foster creativity and boost the confidence of the children.” She noted that this aligns with the values of the 9 Pillars of Character and K4 (Cleanliness, Orderliness, Health, and Safety) promoted by the Indonesia Heritage Foundation, which serves as the foundation for character development in this program.

During the workshop, the children had the opportunity to directly practice the pounding technique on tote bags, resulting in natural leaf patterns. “It was fun and something I had never done before,” said Fathan, one of the students, when asked about his experience participating in the activity.

Through this activity, Salsabilla, the leader of the PPK Ormawa BEM Fema IPB University team, expressed hope that the children of Madrasah Ar-Ridwan would learn about the alternative uses of plants and be encouraged to develop an early awareness of environmental conservation.

“Through this ecoprint activity, it is hoped that children’s creativity can be honed by creating ecoprints from easily accessible and eco-friendly materials, while also instilling a love for the environment,” she said. (*/Rz) (IAAS/RUM)
