The participants of this socialisation activity were all students from grade 2 to grade 6. This activity aims to increase students’ awareness and skills in environmental management.
The activity began with an explanation of the importance of waste segregation. The KKNT Inovasi IPB University students also explained about various types of waste such as organic, inorganic, and hazardous and toxic waste (B3).
“We also explained how to sort waste properly through question and answer sessions and demonstrations using trash bins made from used gallons which are divided into three colours according to the category of waste type,” said Ulwan Amani Syarifudin, one of the IPB University students.
Through this method, he said, students were introduced to the procedures for separating waste at home and at school and the importance of recycling to reduce negative impacts on the environment.
Furthermore, students provided material on the importance of home yard utilisation. KKNT Inovasi students introduced various ways to utilise the yard effectively.
“We showed how to make a ‘Nutrition Garden’ in the school yard and its benefits for the environment and health. This activity was accompanied by an active question and answer session. Students showed great enthusiasm and curiosity. They were also involved in practical activities in planting and utilising the school yard,” Urwan explained.
Through this activity, Urwa hopes that students of SDN Mekarjati 2 can better understand the importance of good environmental management and apply the knowledge gained in their daily environment.
