IPB University students who are members of the  Real-Thematic Work Lecture (KKNT) Innovation in Kluwut Village, Bulakamba District, Brebes Regency, Central Java held a Dates programme: Child Friendly Kluwut. Kurma is an educational programme designed to create a safe, educational and fun environment for children in Kluwut Village.

In the programme, IPB University students teach about character building through games, socialising the dangers of bullying, learning English, maths tutoring, and learning motivation. Not only that, the KKNT Inovasi team also introduced various kinds of waste and its handling, as well as making creative trash cans.

“Departing from the unrest of the surrounding community regarding the lack of motivation to learn and there is no strong desire to achieve goals, we designed this programme to change the mindset of children so that they have strong hopes and goals in the future,” said Reifahren, the person in charge of the Kurma programme.

She explained that the programme was conducted over eight meetings. The first week was filled with introductions, motivation to introduce professions, and making a hope tree. The next meeting was filled with the introduction of types of waste, making character trash cans, socialising bullying, making crafts, drawing competitions, learning English and mathematics.

“The children in Kluwut Village are actually very enthusiastic and have high learning motivation and curiosity towards something new. However, most of them do not have the right place to develop themselves,” she explained.

Routine activities are held every Wednesday and Friday at Majelis Taklim As-salam and MI Al-Ikhlas. The programme runs throughout July 2024. Activities are attended by children ranging from grades 1-6 SD.

“Kurma activities are not only carried out in taklim assemblies. However, there is another programme called Kurma Goes to School, where we visit schools to carry out the programmes that have been designed,” Reifahren added.

She said, “The Kurma programme is expected to be a solution to be able to improve good character and broad knowledge instilled early on to children in Kluwut Village.” (*/Rz) (IAAS/RUM)
