The Department of Aquatic Resources Management (MSP), Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science (FPIK) IPB University held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) Policy Brief on Blue Carbon with the aim of providing background direction for policy considerations related to blue carbon in Indonesia.

The first day of FGD discussed the concept and method of blue carbon calculation. The second day discussed the Policy Brief on the blue carbon program. Meanwhile, the third day finalized the policy brief and developed a research roadmap on blue carbon in 2024. FGD were held in a hybrid format at Bigland Hotel.

“In the FGD, the concept of blue carbon ecosystem includes mangrove, seagrass, and salt marshes. In addition, the conservation policy agreed to increase the blue carbon ecosystem conservation area to 40 percent of the existing mangrove and seagrass areas,” said Prof Hefni Effendi, a lecturer at the Department of Aquatic Resource Management.

He continued that, overall the FGD on blue carbon provided many innovative and integrated new insights for participants and for the wider community. The public became more aware of the current status of blue carbon in the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), the development of science technology and funding related to the stock, uptake and emission of blue carbon or carbon in the ocean.

“This FGD concluded that the policy brief on blue carbon that has been prepared is needed as a consideration and can contribute significantly to the development of blue carbon science and policy in our country which has three blue carbon ecosystems,” he said.

“It is also expected that this policy brief can contribute to integrating blue carbon in greenhouse gas emission reduction (NDC),” he concluded. (IAAS/MZS)
