The IPB University Innovation Real-Thematic Work Lecture (KKN-T) team in Cibentang Village, Ciseeng District, Bogor Regency conducted socialization and joint planting in order to utilize yard land. This step was taken as an effort to realize food independence in Cibentang Village. The intended target is the residents of Alam Parung Housing, Cibentang Village.

“One of the efforts in realizing public awareness about food self-sufficiency is by understanding the potential of yard land. Therefore, we conducted socialization and planting using chili, eggplant and papaya plants as an effort to realize this,” said Pajar Bastian, chief executive.

Pajar revealed, as an effort to implement the sustainability of the program, IPB University students also explained how to cultivate plants to how to use organic fertilizers, plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and Biofungicides.

IPB University students from the Department of Plant Protection, Faculty of Agriculture said, through this socialization it was hoped that residents of Alam Parung Housing, especially housewives, could take advantage of their yards by planting horticultural plants. Thus, it can help in the independence of personal food needs or to be commercialized.

Residents actively asked questions and had discussions on the sidelines of the planting practice. They asked about good cultivation methods and how to manage plants that are attacked by pests and diseases. In response, Pajar explained the eradication of diseased plants by removing them to an area far from the plant or burning them. He also suggested managing pests and diseases by utilizing organic materials.

“In addition to training the skills of residents, through this activity KKN-T Innovation IPB University students also distributed tools and materials for planting to villagers, so that they can plant directly in their respective yards. We distributed seedling trays, chili seeds, tomato seeds, pakcoy seeds, PGPR and biofungicides,” said Pajar.

Ten IPB University students from the KKN-T Innovation team were involved in this horticultural planting. They came from various faculties and were accompanied by Fithriyyah Shalihati, SE, MM. (*/Rz) (IAAS/SHY)
