The Rector of IPB University, Prof Arif Satria had the opportunity to give an Eid al-Adha speech at the Sunda Kelapa Mosque, Jakarta (29/6). During this moment, he invited the congregation to inflame the spirit of Eid al-Adha and social concern, reflecting on various stories of the prophets.

He outlined four values that can at least be learned, those are a positive attitude, proactive patience, togetherness, and social care and sharing. The Eid al-Adha momentum is a lesson for humans to increase spiritual capital and social capital for changes to a better Indonesia.

"There are a number of values that we need to explore from the momentum of Eid al-Adha and the story of Prophet Ibrahim. First, the need for a positive attitude in facing exams,“ he explained. This positive attitude, he said, is only possessed by people with high spiritual intelligence and religiosity. This positive attitude will lead to sincerity, trust, and optimism.

“Second, it requires proactive patience and not just passive patience, as exemplified by the prophets. Proactive patience is always marked by a total outward and inward struggle,” he continued.

This means, continued Prof. Arif, whether or not a people progress in life is highly dependent on their proactive attitude and initiative by utilizing the resources that God has bestowed on humans. This proactive step is based on sharp vision, strategy, and execution.

“So, the pleasures of life are not obtained instantly. A systematic effort is needed through the stages of a tiered process. This is where proactivity and initiative are prerequisites for our transformation efforts going forward," said Prof Arif.

The third value is togetherness and social concern. Humans are created with diversity, so interdependence and networking are conditions that need to be strived for. Moreover, this era requires strong collaboration skills.

"Togetherness to continue to share ideas, enthusiasm, inspiration, good luck, and prayers is a very important base to face a crisis. Currently developing what is called the gift economy. In the past, giving to people was a cost, now it is an investment," he explained.

Fourth, Eid al-Adha is a moment to share. The spirit of sharing is an important social capital for the sustainability of human life. If the community has a strong social network, followed norms, and is classified as a high-trust society, then the community has social capital.

“So, the spirit of sharing between us can encourage stronger social networks and growing mutual trust. These are all social provisions that are very important for our progress," he concluded. (MW/Rz) (IAAS/BLA)
