IPB University students who are members of the Asa Conservation (Asarasi) environmental community with Friends of the Sea of Indonesia (SLI) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) participate in mangrove planting and clean-up activities. The activity took place at the Angke Kapuk Nature Park some time ago.

With the theme Climate Guardians, Put The Oceans First at the Angke Kapuk Nature Park, this event was attended by volunteers and refugees (refugees) who took place in Jakarta, Tangerang and Bekasi with a total of around 150 people.

Elif Ivanna Hendastari, one of the IPB University students involved, reported that in this activity the number of mangrove seedlings that were successfully planted was 150. In addition, participants managed to collect trash using tongs and trash bags made of cassava weighing up to 42.23 kilograms.

"In order to celebrate World Ocean Day, it is hoped that through this activity participants can be more aware of the role of the sea, especially the mangrove ecosystem which turns out to have an important function for life on earth," she explained.

Through this momentum, SLI also activates and campaigns for educational programs initiated by young people through the Conservation Class. The event is a competition to generate solutive ideas related to environmental problems that can be implemented directly in the surrounding community.

Elif, an IPB University student from the Department of Marine Science and Technology (ITK), Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) succeeded in becoming the winner in the 2022 SLI Conservation Class. In the World Ocean Day activity, she was also with the Asarasi team which consisted of IPB University students (Cahya Riza Haromaen, Ananda Dwija Priambada and Larisa Hana Gusti).

“It feels great to be involved in activities that have a positive impact on the environment. I hope that this activity can expand the network and spread enthusiasm in voicing conservation, especially marine and trash conservation," said Elif.

The contribution of foreign refugees also shows their important role in being involved in protecting the environment. This program is also to increase awareness of the environment wherever they are and provide benefits for life in the future. (Raw/Rz) (IAAS/Res)
