IPB University Lecturers and Students Pioneered the STEM Workshop at the IEEE Indonesia Section
Recently, IPB University lecturers and students had the opportunity to carry out a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) workshop at the Pre-University level with support from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). IEEE is the largest engineering professional organization in the world concerned with STEM education at the pre-university level.
Auzi Asfarian, SKomp, MKom, an IPB University lecturer from the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) along with the IEEE Student Branch of IPB University, received the IEEE Pre-University STEM Portal Program 2023 funding from IEEE TryEngineering last April. This funding is designed to support and facilitate STEM activities at the pre-university level of education.
"In 2023, the IEEE Indonesia Section together with the IEEE Student Branch of IPB University are entrusted with this grant to organize the STEM Pre-University in August for junior and senior high school students in West Java. The activity is entitled Connecting Pre-University Students with Computing: A Two-Day Workshop to Explore the Exciting World of Informatics," stated Auzi Asfarian, who is also a Senior Member of IEEE.
This activity will be held on August 12-13, 2023 and will take place at the Department of Computer Science, FMIPA IPB University. It is targeted to be attended by 100 participants from junior and senior high schools as well as four practitioners in the engineering field.
Previously, a team from the IEEE Student Branch IPB University took part in the Pre-University STEM Workshop (14/5) at the Binus ASO School of Engineering. This activity was held in collaboration with IEEE Region 10 (Asia Pacific), IEEE Indonesia Section and IEEE Student Branch Binus University. Followed by eight teachers and 27 students from the Fitrah Islamic World Academy in Ciseeng, Bogor. These students demonstrated a great passion for engineering and entrepreneurship, which further emphasizes the importance of this workshop.
The STEM Pre-University Workshop aims to educate students about the use of artificial intelligence in pre-university education and facilitate collaboration between schools, IEEE and IEEE Student Branch activities. This event was successful thanks to the support and guidance of prominent figures such as Prof. Lance Fung (Director of IEEE Region 10), Prof. Gamantyo Hendrantoro and Dr. Agnes Irwanti (Chair and Deputy Chair of the IEEE Indonesia Section), Dr. Nia Kurnianingsih (Treasurer of IEEE R10), Dr. Leo Hwa Chiang (Director of Singapore Ops IEEE Asia-Pacific Limited) and Dr Suryadiputra Liawatimena and Dr Nur Afny C Andryan (Binus University), as well as IEEE Student Branch Binus University.
On this occasion, Prof. Lance Fung introduced the workshop participants to the IEEE TryEngineering initiative (https://tryengineering.org/) and IEEE REACH (https://reach.ieee.org/). These platforms provide valuable resources for students and teachers to explore and learn about engineering at the pre-university level.
IEEE also provides the IEEE Pre-University STEM Portal Grant and IEEE STEM Champion to support IEEE organizational units or members in carrying out STEM activities at the pre-university level. Meanwhile, Auzi Asfarian MKom introduced career opportunities in the field of engineering and how IEEE activities can help students understand engineering and plan the careers that they aspire to.
