Postgraduate School (SPs) IPB University held another SPs IPB University Podcast Episode 29 reviewing the topic of the study program (Prodi) Agricultural and Rural Development Communication (KMP) at the Faculty of Human Ecology (Fema) IPB University (9/4). This SPs IPB University podcast was filled by the speaker of the Head of Study Program Prof Sumardjo and guided by Nur Sulianti Suci Pertiwi, SP as the host.

“The beginning of the history of KMP Study Program which is under the Department of Communication Science and Community Development (SKPM) was established in 1984. KMP Study Program is now a combination of 4 study programs, namely 2 doctoral programs and 2 master programs. The master program was established in 1984 and the doctoral program was established in 2003,” he said.

He added, in 2019 a merger was carried out from the KMP study program with the Development Extension Study Program (PPN). Actually, the PPN Study Program has been established for a long time, around 1974 and is one of the oldest study programs at IPB University.

“So there’s no need to worry for prospective students who ask about the PPN Study Program. The study program is not lost, but now it is one of the specializations in the KMP Study Program and its competence remains consistent unchanged, “he explained.

Prof Sumardjo explained, so far those who entered the KMP Study Program had various backgrounds such as journalism, environment, health, social and so on. ” Indeed, IPB University has this KMP Study Program which is related to journalists, one of the courses is development journalism,” he added.

He said, in Indonesia alone for counseling there are 11 ministries and institutions that have functional positions of extension workers, while for communication it is even wider. According to him, the KMP Study Program continues to develop, one of which is anti-corruption counseling which is currently very important in society.

“Likewise, disaster problems, how to anticipate them to be ready and post-disaster mitigation also require development counseling. Even conflict resolution through counseling is much more efficient and effective.  Therefore, to be an extension worker, you must master communication, development counseling must also master development communication,” he said.

Prof Sumardjo said that counseling is a communication science that deepens education. Extension is also a pillar of national development, namely educating the nation’s life to realize prosperity.

“The goal is to change behavior to become more empowered, competent, increase its capacity, leadership, sociopreneur and that is what is explored in this KMP Study Program,” he explained.

He added, currently KMP Study Program both doctoral and master programs have been accredited A from the National Accreditation Board of Higher Education (BAN PT) and opened registration for new SPs IPB University students in odd semesters and opened two admission paths, which are regular and by research.
