Engineer Professional Program (PPI) Postgraduate School (SPs) IPB University held a public lecture with the theme of Engineer Professional Ethics (11/3). The event was held online by presenting speakers Ir Sutarto, MM, MT, IPU, ASEAN Eng, members of the Council for the Code of Ethics (MKE) of the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII) guided by Niken Ayu Permatasari, STP, MSi, Secretary of the PPI Study Program (Prodi) as moderator.
The Head of the PPI SPs IPB University Study Program, Prof Muhammad Romli said, the theme of professional engineering ethics is one of the three compulsory subjects of the PPI study program. This course is attended by students from both the regular and past learning recognition (RPL) pathways, as well as being generally attended by students of SPs IPB University as well as undergraduate graduates.
"We hope that this public lecture can refresh and remind us of the relevance and importance of engineering ethics and professionalism to be able to carry out our duties and roles as engineers properly," he said.
Meanwhile, Niken Ayu Permatasari, STP, MSi stated that the PPI Study Program has currently graduated 694 people through the regular and RPL pathways who come from various fields of biological engineering, namely the agricultural industry, agriculture and agricultural products, forestry, animal science, civil and environmental, fisheries and marine also applied science.
"The expected output of this activity is that participants are able to apply engineering professional ethics in carrying out planning, design and evaluation to later be practiced in their respective worlds of work," he explained.
Ir Sutarto in this public lecture explained the meaning of ethics according to Engineering Law (UU) No. 11 of 2014 is the principle of implementing engineering practice based on norms, moral values and rules of the engineering profession. There are several common types of violations of the code of ethics, for example related to conflicts of interest, confidentiality and loyalty, return contributions and whistleblowing.
"If there is a violation, then there must be a will based on awareness and courage from fellow professionals to warn against any violation of the professional code of ethics," he said. Ir Sutarto added, cases or violations of the engineer's code of ethics must go through a complaint offense. Meanwhile, MKE only handles cases of engineers' code of ethics in engineering practice.
"In identifying potential cases of violations of the engineer's code of ethics, there are several things that must be considered. Among other things, ensure that there are cases, ensure that the perpetrators are reported, then complete the facts with accurate and valid data as well as detailed strong indications of violations," he concluded.
